taste is a funny thing; as someone who also likes ambient music, it's hard to explain to others how track that's just someone playing a single note for 20mins is sublime and breathtaking while another of someone doing exactly the same thing is total dogshit
😂

the most interesting thing about it was the focus on how in the 90s, 'selling out' and corporate art was frowned upon, whereas now we have to vaildate people's love of corporate intellectual property

even tho that guardian article wasn't very good, I'm glad it has emboldened more people to admit something that was always so obviously true. to come out as 'cultural snobs' or whatever. the idea that it's classist is so dumb, as if taylor swift or ed sheeran or whatever working class art

so you just add ground coffee directly? Weirdly I think if I were to get anything like this I'd go for an old-school american style filter dripper with the hot plate

ooh, what kind. I have nearly all the analogue ones but am currently drawing the line at buying anything you need to plug in.

Working through early Beckett. Murphy is a really tough hang. It makes More Pricks Than Kicks feel like a ripping yarn. This was my third read and I can almost guarantee that I will never read it again in this life.

getting royalties is so awesome. especially when it just gets paid straight into your account with no invoice. i know we have earnt that money and it doesn't even begin to make up for our low pay, it still feels like free money. I made sure to spend mine immediately on utter frivolities.

I remember him writing a very funny if unfair hatchet job on Henry Miller? But aren't they quite similar in being novelists who had a huge cultural impact in their days but are very hard to read now (I loved Miller as a 19 year old, but I'm not sure if he works beyond that age anymore...)

fair point. I just mean in that they can be closed communities where people can talk about specific things.

Discord is basically this no?

I was emboldened to do a post along the lines of "Adults should not be watching superhero films without children" or "Ed Sheeran is not just as good as Bob Dylan" but it felt cheap and straw-manny. Lucky no one reads my posts anyway 😉

It's not a great article but I'm very pleased someone said it!

It's a great article. One thing that is great to see living in Wales is how, despite the two languages having very little shared vocabulary, the really elemental things like rivers (afon/abhainn) and rocks (craig/carraig) or in this case tree names (bedwen, derwen, collen) never changed.

Look at this. Just look at it.

A Labour politician demanding that people ignore an active, ongoing genocide that has killed more civilians in Gaza in 3 years than died in the whole of the UK during the Second World War.

If refusing to ignore that is un-British, I'm un-British.

I have to say, I am a bit tired of not being nominated for, and winning, prizes. I'm in this for the fame and money, dammit!

i also hate the way these supposed "Christians" always seek out the the most hyper-specific denomination that suits their own beliefs and aesthetic. how can he talk about indigineity while being a (checks notes) Romanian Orthodox Christian. Isn't his whole point that you can't pick and choose?

why am i not surprised that he doesn't live in England, ffs. is he basically the thinking man's Russell Brand now?

It's that time again when I pick up my copy of Jesus's Son...
As a prose stylist, Denis Johnson is surely unparalleled. A few of the paragraphs in that book must rank among the finest in English literature... e.g.

and the financial instability. I don't think I'm the kind of person who is good at not having roughly the same income every month.

I love the freedom (e.g. going to sack off work after lunch and walk up a hill) and also working mostly on stuff I like.
I like not having my timetable dictated by someone else (apart from my family lol)
I hate the solitude, the hustle for work, feelings of jealousy towards other colleague...

Beckett never misses. from now on I will refer to eating exclusively as 'smiting the sledded Polacks on the ice'

You actually have to stop this Des. It's not fair!

My gran used to have a book holder like the one pictured for just such eventualities. i inherited it but unfortunately it's too warped to use. it still doesn't turn the pages for you though...
