Yeah, I'm partial to Drance: they'll still finish bottom 5 regardless of whatever moves they make since the core make up ain't great, and the moves they *should* make--trading UFAs/one of Demko/Lank, playing 3 rookie D--will only get them closer to bottom 3 than the mushy middle.

I’d always heard this, but in Vancouver, never saw it. Just tons of Starbucks. First trip to Toronto in 2001, immediately got. Donut shops are to Toronto as Starbucks/cafes is to Vancouver.

Who wants to be “that kind of team”? Outshooting and barely beating superior teams all while having 0 chance of challenging the top or even playoffs? Leave that space for the Calgarys of the world. I’d rather be last and building than mid and staying there.

At first the students kinda laughed at my seemingly strict anti-AI stance, but they’ve come around. 50+ years of “education as means to money-making ends” have convinced them it’s the mark not the work that matters. I constantly use sports/music analogies to convince them otherwise.

I teach HS. I open the pdf of the novel we’re reading. Adobe AI: “This is a complicated document. You want help with a summary?” No, AI. The complexity is the point. Imagine at the gym. You put 2 45kg plates on the bench press and a robot slides up to: “That looks heavy. You want help lifting it?”

TikTok, Snapchat, Twitch, Discord, Reddit, IG, whatever. I teach HS & for 75% of students, that’s pretty much it. The rest is that + anime, games, fanfic based on anime and games and Spotify playlists where they skip every 3rd song.
