Our National Parks are at risk. ⚠️

From the rugged Lakes to the sweeping South Downs, these landscapes define us and our future. They sustain wildlife, communities and our wellbeing - and they must be protected.

A future that puts them at risk isn't what anyone voted for.
A scenic view of a National Park landscape with a winding stone path leading through green hills and valleys under soft sunlight. In the centre of the image, bold black text on a red-and-black hazard-striped background reads: “DON’T WEAKEN NATIONAL PARK PROTECTIONS.” Below it, in white text, is the hashtag “#NationalParksMatter.”

But risks remain.

The Bill is still moving through Parliament and we may need your support again.

Perhaps most importantly:

An EDP can only go ahead if the best science shows nature will be in a better state afterwards than before work started.
rspbaction.bsky.social
On monitoring:

EDPs must now be checked against what they promise for nature. If benefits fall short, extra measures have to be added. Natural England must also assess impacts on species and protected sites.
rspbaction.bsky.social
On irreplaceable habitats:

Guidance now makes clear that sites like ancient woodland or limestone pavement cannot be included in EDPs. Crucially, EDPs must also follow the ‘precautionary principle’ – better safe than sorry.
rspbaction.bsky.social
Government amendments made several key improvements to EDPs.

On avoiding harm:

EDPs will now be required to avoid or, if not possible, reduce harm upfront. Where damage would be irreversible, measures must be in place before it happens.

The Planning Bill introduces a new mechanism: Environmental Delivery Plans (EDPs).

They are a new system that lets the impacts of multiple developments be considered together over a wider area, with any restoration measures planned in one package, instead of site by site.

The Planning Bill will have huge consequences for England’s wildlife.

UK Govt amendments – won after thousands spoke up – improved some parts. But risks remain, and we’re working to ensure safeguards are watertight.

What’s changed & what’s still at stake 🧵👇

Going on a seed hunt?

Responsible seed gathering is a great way to embrace autumn - and can help nature in your garden or green space too.

The tree you climbed as a child. Gone. The Swifts over your town. Gone. The air you breathe. Polluted. The river. Unsafe.

This is the reality of deregulation.

Cutting protections would mean disaster for nature & our economy.

Our CEO sets out why: rspb.org.uk/whats-happen... 👈
A small flock of Swifts sweep across a clear blue sky, their slim bodies and crescent wings cutting sharply above the roof of a house. A beloved summer sight - and one at risk of disappearing if protections for nature are lost.

We’ve joined 33 organisations calling on Govt to fund the future of planning. It’s vital for the future of our wildlife and communities. 👇

9 in 10 councils are struggling to recruit planners.

Whilst Govt has pledged 300, research shows 600 - 3,000 more are needed.

Without urgent funding, housing, net zero & nature recovery are all at risk.

We’re sounding the alarm for seabirds 🚨

The Scottish Government has announced plans for a massive expansion of offshore wind – but there is almost nothing in these plans to protect our vulnerable seabirds from the impacts.

We welcome the UK Government’s move to amend Part 3 of the Planning Bill in response to widespread concern.

These changes show encouraging intent, and we'll be scrutinising the detail carefully.

If protections for nature fall short, we'll keep holding government to account.
A House Sparrow perches on the edge of a rooftop, with warm-toned brick in the background. An emblem of everyday wildlife, small but familiar, that depends on careful planning decisions and strong protections to survive.

Proposed changes to Biodiversity Net Gain could exempt most developments from contributing to nature and fall short on major infrastructure.

This risks taking the system backwards. BNG must be strengthened, not weakened.
