Drought is a natural part of climatic variability, but interacts with human pressures to cause biodiversity loss in rivers.

Habitat restoration can both reduce flood risk and promote ecological resilience to drought – a win-win – but investment is needed.

How restoring river catchments can minimise drought and flood risks
Natural infrastructure can be restored in ways that reduce both flood risk and the effects of drought.

What a wonderful day we had at the @freshwaterbio.bsky.social 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting at Nottingham Trent University. Brilliant discussions on ghost ponds, climate change, pollution, outdoor swimming, being 'activist scientist' and the concept of riverkin. Can't wait to do it again next year!

Last-minute change to the line up! We welcome @samtasker.bsky.social to talk about how the @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social Headstart project will kickstart nature recovery by restoring headwaters.

Want to come? Hurry! There are only 8 in-person tickets left and registration closes on Sunday.

Another week left to get your abstract in for the SEFS14 conference www.sefs14.com - deadline now 10 April.

@messamat.bsky.social and I welcome submissions to our session SS-02 Science and management of non-perennial rivers and streams. Lots of others to choose from too www.sefs14.com/sessions

I've signed the petition "Don’t abandon the Chalk Stream recovery pack".

The recovery pack would increase investment and regulation, helping improve the state of chalk streams - globally rare rivers of ecological and cultural importance.
