There is often public and media conversation framing Chicagoland’s transit fiscal cliff as a fight between the city and the suburbs. CTA, Metra, and Pace have different needs, but a thriving system requires sustainable funding for all three agencies.

Imagine one app to plan your trip, pay your fare, and transfer across CTA, Metra, and Pace. Seamless travel for all Chicagoland riders is possible if the General Assembly passes a sustainable transit solution. Sign a letter to your legislator at SaveTransitNow.org 📲

Our sincere hope is that Springfield acts on reform and funding as soon as possible. Tell legislators our region and our riders deserve a transit system that is not constantly under threat of being cut by sending a letter at www.savetransitnow.org.

We also didn’t come up with these reforms alone. RTA worked with riders, advocates, organized labor, local officials, and state lawmakers to draft a legislative proposal to deliver an efficient, accountable, affordable, and integrated transit network. www.rtachicago.org/blog/2025/05...

Funding crises and reform debates have swirled around Chicago’s transit system for decades. To understand today’s challenges, and ensure these reforms do the most for riders, we looked back nearly 50 years to inform our proposal. www.rtachicago.org/blog/2025/04...

CTA, Metra, Pace, and the RTA have acted early and acted together — with transparency and accountability. We have been vocal about this funding gap for years and worked to delay the impacts for as long as possible, while also advocating for reform the system needs.

In 2027, all federal relief funds will have been spent, and we will have a full-scale crisis. The region will experience rolling cuts, more transit operators will be laid off, and riders will suffer with less frequent and reliable service.
rtachicago.bsky.social
Beginning in 2026, the CTA will run out of funding and be forced to cut service. Layoff notices to transit operators whose routes are affected by cuts will go out in the second quarter of 2026 with cuts starting in the third quarter of 2026.

The cost saving actions along with the higher-than-expected revenue will delay cuts slightly but will not provide the transit agencies with the resources needed to deliver what riders want -- more frequent and more reliable service.

At this early stage of the budget process, we can project an estimated budget gap of approximately $200 million for 2026 that will balloon back to the full cliff of about $790 million in 2027 and will grow each year.

If lawmakers continue to delay action on funding and reform, riders will begin to feel the pain through service cuts and fare increases in 2026, with worsening impacts when the full cliff hits in 2027. www.rtachicago.org/uploads/file...

We have also benefited from increased operating revenue from the RTA sales tax due to a change in state law related to online sales. These actions will buy lawmakers a little more time, but the funding gap still looms.
rtachicago.bsky.social
We have worked to delay the worst impacts from riders for as long as possible by stretching every dollar, managing costs, applying a reasonable 10% increase to fares in 2026, and finding tens of millions in efficiencies.
