Ruffed Grouse settled down on Hugelkultur to watch me work, hoping to return to eating the hawthorn berries nearby. After passing by she was seen pecking at the mound and scratching. Very content ground bird. I hope she is seen again in spring with chicks! But just a few meters from where she rests is the fox den. A very lively 1/4 acre lot.

And it works! First time I had the chance to use this method with a grouse. Its worked before with song birds, snakes, wild turkeys and deer. I never hand out food so they do not have that expectation from me. Instead I build habitat and plant native foods. The grouse was here to eat hawberries. 3/3

I move slowly and speak softly, we both know we see each other. My method is to not stare, ignore and continue my task they were previously watching not a meter away from me before. They settle and watch as I finish. I need to move past them. I decide to record this method... 2/3

Landscaping path & installing new garden beds. I use the sod to build a #Hugelkultur fence on the property line and on top will plant Quercus prinoides (dwarf Chinquapin oak) to weave into a living fence. I look up to see a ruffed grouse staring... 1/3

The 4th Tree needed to go in the ground quickly and the spot did not have the space for a proper woven enclosure, so I wove hawthorn branches around them.

The last image is a white ash that I am shaping into a Fruit Picker/Crook/Distaff/Pole Sling started ~3yrs ago. Will probably be ready next yr

In spring, I got 4 Chinquapin Oak saplings (Quercus muehlenbergii), but deer would devour them. Instead of the typical plastic or metal fence, I built these "Tree Houses" throughout June.
