Like I’ve said before, this is the problem with single-party dominance. Smart conservatives like Bates run as Democrats to escape scrutiny and win elections.

That would be a disaster

As a prosecutor, he can always choose not to prosecute. He could freely decide that e.g. having a beer in the park isn’t worth his office’s time. He could tell the city that he’s going to let our violence prevention services do their jobs.

This is the exact same thing we saw with the citations docket. He takes minor harms that don’t need to be prosecuted and drags people into the legal system.

I’m not saying I know the right way to do this, but expanding the popular understanding of what other people deserve seems like a really important political project
December 2, 2025 at 8:55 PM
It does seem like there’s a pretty wide range of what people think of as “someone getting something they don’t deserve”, though

Like every so often you’ll see a conservative get mad because a poor person has a phone, but that’s actually a very normal thing to have
December 2, 2025 at 8:54 PM
Thanks! I’ll have to actually remember to check the app next time
December 2, 2025 at 8:46 PM
Okay great, so how should we design our air transportation system to make sure that people can do that?
December 2, 2025 at 8:41 PM
How do you think someone should do that

Should they buy a ticket on a cargo ship and journey across the pacific for two weeks
December 2, 2025 at 8:37 PM
The only thing I can think of is that you might save a little bit of time on driving the trash truck if people live closer together

But that seems really marginal

*private train cabin
December 2, 2025 at 8:02 PM
No, I’m talking about putting the pet relief station on the left into the private train car on the right
December 2, 2025 at 7:57 PM
Did you miss the part where I said I think there should be better non-driving options but they don’t have to be planes
December 2, 2025 at 7:52 PM
“Maybe Baltimore County would be more to your tastes?”
December 2, 2025 at 7:50 PM
I’m not trying to justify pretending that a dog is a service animal. I’m just saying that fewer people would want to do it if there were more + better options for transporting a dog
December 2, 2025 at 7:47 PM
Yeah I’d definitely like to see less flying and would love it if we shifted more of our intercity transit to passenger rail
December 2, 2025 at 7:45 PM
I’m sure it’s fine that if someone has a disability that keeps them from driving, their options for moving cross country are:

1. Risk their dog’s life in the cargo hold

2. Hire someone to drive them across the country

3. Surrender their dog to the shelter
December 2, 2025 at 7:44 PM
Has this whole thing been because you think “demand” means showing up to the airport and saying “I demand you let my dog on the plane”?
December 2, 2025 at 7:41 PM
Wait, do you not understand the concept of economic demand?
December 2, 2025 at 7:41 PM
Wanting to travel with your dog is not a sin!
December 2, 2025 at 7:40 PM
I think it’s pretty obvious that that’s not meeting the demand
December 2, 2025 at 7:31 PM
Yeah, it’s just that the limit on size is pretty small
December 2, 2025 at 7:30 PM
I think you’d probably just do something like they have in airports now where you have a strip of fake grass in the private room

Not really sure what your point is re: allergies. There are no restrictions on Amtrak for e.g. peanuts
December 2, 2025 at 7:29 PM
Like, some Amtrak cars have private cabins. It seems like it would be pretty reasonable to be able to rent one for you and your dog. That’s just not allowed right now
