Why is it that can openers have been around for over a hundred years, but modern ones do such a horrible job?

I dunno why, but I decided to play through the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game. Holy shit this game is brutal. I love the old school pc fps feel, but the difficulty is insane. Even with mods, I’m struggling.
