Everyone here skeptical of Trump winning a Nobel are underestimating how complicit our institutions are in the Genocide. The "establishment" is going to be incredibly grateful for any opportunity to airbrush their complicity and moral hypocrisy. A crappy "peace deal" grants them that.

@diplomatofnight.com I am going to need your sanity on this one. Because reading this makes me more worried than ever about a possible peace deal.

"On this basis, the technocratic body to be chaired by Trump, but likely to be dominated by Blair with some figures from the Palestinian diaspora, could derive its legitimacy through its effectiveness." Are you kidding me? This is insane.
n this basis, the technocratic body to be chaired by Trump, but likely to be dominated by Blair with some figures from the Palestinian diaspora, could derive its legitimacy through its effectiveness.

Blair will be working against the destabilising backdrop of imminent elections in both Israel and Palestine. One of the body’s first tasks will be to build a relationship with Palestinian politics. Blair has close relations with the elites of the Middle East but none with the street, and he may leave to others such as Egypt the task of mediating an intra-Palestinian dialogue on Palestinian unity, a dialogue led by China, that the ageing and authoritarian PA president has sought to sabotage.

"Most Palestinians on the ground have resigned themselves to their fate"... This is bad! You're describing Palestinians accepting apartheid because it is better than Genocide.
Tahani Mustafa, of the European Council on Foreign Relations, argues that since the 7 October attack Palestinian politics has shifted to a more transactional outlook. “Palestinians are looking to someone that can make life bearable, keep them on their land and improve their living conditions. The very bare minimum is what people are asking for. Most Palestinians on the ground have resigned themselves to their fate.”

Netanyahu is the extremist in his coalition! What is this garbage? Why would Hamas disarm if they know there will still be Israeli troops in their territory? How has that worked out in the West Bank?
After the plan’s publication, Netanyahu in a video message assured his domestic audience that Israel’s red lines were protected: Gaza separated from the West Bank, no return by the PA to Gaza, no path toward a “two-state solution” and no removal of Israel security forces from the majority of the Gaza Strip.

In trying to assuage the extremists in his coalition, Netanyahu was also doing all he could to persuade Hamas to reject the plan, so he could pursue the military offensive into Gaza City.

This just reeks of someone (probably a Brit or French diplomat) briefing about how brilliant there negotiations have been. The Arab states have been willing to work with Israel for decades. It's just the price has always been peace with Palestinians and end to apartheid. A price Israel won't pay.
Barrot said the new UN text went further than ever before. “We got them … to say that they aspire not only to have a normal relationship with Israel, but to enter into a common regional architecture in the model of Asean in Asia or OSCE in Europe,” he said. “We got them to say things they never said.”

So, contrary to appearance, the weeks and days leading up to the general assembly was about the Arab states reaching out to Israel. Far from being rewarded, Hamas, an opponent of a two-state solution, was being ostracised from political power in Palestine, a fate its battered leadership has reluctantly accepted.

It looks very much like the National Press Club statement lied about their cancellation of Chris Hedges. His appearance WAS confirmed, and even listed on the website, according to this.
(Hedges believes his talk on Gaza was cancelled following pressure from the pro-Israel lobby):

This is the most frustrating thing about these institutions caving to Zionist pressure, they always lie! Just be honest and say the zionist lobby got mad and so you caved. Why do this dance? It doesn't fool anyone.

Also don't underestimate how much these cases breakthrough to politicians. They are all lawyers who hope to participate in these international institutions when they leave office.

No law court is ever going to put an end to Genocide. But it can help maintain the pressure. These cases are just one part of all the international efforts including boycotts, protests awareness campaigns, and mutual assistance campaigns.

I know a lot of people are in the camp of "International Law is an imaginary unicorn". But this slow process is an important part of putting collective pressure on Israel and the states who support it.

Cynically opposing the obvious; Israel is committing Genocide and so must be sanctioned and isolated. Erodes peoples trust. It leaves Labor vulnerable to the narrative they are evasive and opportunistic. You don't give leeway to Parties who behave that way.
rukitty.bsky.social
"Political capital" is a real thing. It's the leeway voters give you when you have their faith and trust. Very few people will vote directly based on a policy. But a lot of people will vote based on the "vibe" of whether they think a party has their interests at heart. Or whether a party "get's it"
rukitty.bsky.social
This is about how ignoring the obvious, saying; "We don't know if its Genocide" or "We don't sell weapons to Israel" or "Australia is just a wittle small boy and can't do anything to influence Israel". Creates a toxic cycle of cynicism and distrust.

Why would anyone believe anything Labor says? 2/

Labor will be kidding themselves if they think doing nothing isn't going to blow back on them. This isn't necessarily about people being mad about Palestine and not voting for them 1/
