Great sea watch from St Ives on Saturday with great views of at least 6 first-cycle long-tailed skuas.

Long-tailed Skua montage pics from Pendeen, 5th Oct. At least nine were seen from St. Ives and Pendeen over the 4th & 5th Oct (Storm Amy). It’s been a bumper year for the species with numbers way above the county rolling average. Good luck to the county recorder assessing them all!

Nice views of the Wilson’s Phalarope today on Porthellick Pool, Scilly. 1st October ‘25.

My first for Scilly and seventh overall for Cornwall.

A very confiding Red-necked Phalarope was found today at St Gothians, Gwithian by Brad Dallas.

This is approx the 37th record for Cornwall and quite a local rarity. It’s just my third for the county.

Brilliant, Tom. No 4 pic is just stunning.

Flashback to 28th August when this stunning adult Pomarine Skua graced Pendeen Watch.

There’s something about Poms. They always demand attention.

Thanks Mark. Great Shearwater seems to move around in massive foraging groups. Yesterday there were zero birds at the Lizard. The wind shifted to South direction overnight, up from Biscay and clearly had an effect. SSW is a key wind if you can put up with rain and murk.
Overnight wind direction on 18th/19th Sep ‘25. Lizard sightings 18th Sept. ‘25.

Lizard Point 19th Sep ‘25.

I switched location as road closed to Porthgwarra. Incredible movement of 17000 Great Shearwater plus 46 Sooty, 59 Balearic, ad Long-tailed Skua and 300+ Gannet.

Video shows constant movement 1 mile offshore. Video quality has been dumbed down by platform prividers.

Pendeen Watch three hour session 16th Sept ‘25.

Just picking out the by catch from Storm Amy, but still a decent session. All but one Great Shearwater now gone but 27 Arctic Skua and nine Bonxie plus 14 Sabine’s Gull. One stunning ad by the Wra was massively appreciated by the visiting birders.

Curlew Sandpiper at Davidstow (12th Sep). One of three currently with a group of thirty other small waders. Seems to be a good year for Curlew Sandpiper.

The current phase of strong W and SW winds are delivering some incredible seabird records in Cornwall.

Hi Steve
I would get assume from the Lizard “reef” and further. Most of the Porthgwarra birds are just inside the Runnelstone, some really close, others 2-3 miles out.
runnelstone.bsky.social
A massive count of 53,000 Great Shearwaters off the The Lizard today. Well done to the Lizard faithful. Can’t beat a big SSW storm!🤛
