Day 2 of the #DIKBCHALLENGE25: a book for 15-18 years old

Treacle Town by Brian Conaghan is a gripping YA story about the importance of words and the power of poetry for a young boy who is looking for a way out of the life he is living 🩷🧡🩷🧡

We're losing generations of artists to fundamental needs not being met and this is the government's chance to stop failing us.

Genuinely folks, there is no future for Irish artists if the Basic Income for the Arts programme doesn't continue. The cost of living and houses crisis impacts us all, but the recent reports indicate artists are 3 times more at risk to be below the poverty line.

I'm starting to plan things to do in the lead up and around the publication date of my book (Feb 2026)

Children's and YA book folks, what advice would you give to someone with a debut?

I've just spent the most lovely day settling into the LexIcon and yapping with Eve who has my whole heart. There are so many good days ahead, I know it.

I'll also be facilitating a series of panels for teenagers interested in exploring a career in books and stories. There are so many possibilities for booklovers and I want to do my bit to help them break into this world.

It's been a dream of mine to do a residency like this for years. I'll be focusing on writing a verse novel for teens, based on my experience with Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

I can hardly believe I'm saying this. I'm so beyond thrilled and grateful to be appointed the Emerging Writer in Residence alongside the wonderful @evemcdonnell.bsky.social as the Established Writer in Residence at Dun Laoghaire CoCo Arts

I think we ALL have had moments like Marsha's...!

Olivia is such a fabulous writer and the picturebook world is better for having her in it.

The illustrations are so nice and bright and colourful and just so well produced.

This is such a specific sense of humour that really tickles me. I love a story about trying to navigate social cues and this book does it so well and with genuine charm.

Marsha the dinosaur loves living in the jungle, but notices that everyone seems to have a friend except for her. When she spots another, smaller dino, she's VERY eager to become best friends. To the point where she comes on a teeeeeeny bit too strong.

I'm just on the way back from the lovely launch of this book at Dubray Grafton (at which I took exactly zero photos oops)

I LOVE the @dublinbookfest.bsky.social so much, in many ways it started my career in books back in 2017 (I think) when I first volunteered at the festival.

I'm unbelievably excited to be doing a school event this year with the festival, and of course it's all about poetry!
