Yup. I tried to get a big group of Cultists (Cult Fang, Cult Adept etc) but the full range of roles doesn’t exist for all of these groups.

Anyway, all of this to say: this experience has really underscored how neurodivergent brains may struggle with any game but this one is definitely challenging me. And I love it, I wouldn’t be trying if I didn’t.

If you’re a Daggerheart GM how are you finding it so far?

We play theater of the mind, I should note. I mostly kept track of HP and my own Fear tracker but Stress was largely fudged, I confess. I’m using FreshCutGrass (a browser based DH tool) to do this as Demiplane isn’t there yet for GM-side utility. But I left my iPad at home so it was on my phone.

So the end result was I just had a mass of different guys who I needed to individually spotlight when it was turn to go (when players roll with Fear or fail an attack) and because I was mostly reskinning and cribbing it became something of a blur. It certainly never felt tactical or dangerous.

This isn’t too dissimilar to D&D5e or, more accurately, D&D4e. Encounters are assumed to be properly built around monster types and roles. With 5e though I was usually able to quickly grab an appropriate monster or three and go. Not so easily here.

Also when assembling an encounter you’re advised to spend a points budget on the baddies and their point costs vary on their combat role. Ranged, Skulk, Minion, Solo, etc. For a four player game it’s like 14 points for a standard challenge. And the roles aren’t equally distributed.

There isn’t a big Monster Manual for the game, though a couple of 3rd party publishers have put out some books. The published stat blocks are very… selective? Specific? So you need to reskin or crib new stats on the fly. Sometimes you have to adjust them up and down a tier for them to work.

I admit many of us Gen X designers are probably fully unsure what on earth they’re talking about

You can get the gist of it from the replies. Basically they’re asking if TTRPG design communities are siloing again after a long period of inter-community discourse.

Alternatively you could use a variants of Sentinel Comics’ GYRO system! I’m working with that right now over at my Patreon as part of Gyro Shooter, though I think I might try to figure out some Smallville-esque drama stuff to pair with it.
