That's honestly a horrible way to do things. So many of the challenges we face today were, in my opinion, either preventable or of our own making through lack of vision in certain areas and blind, misguided, idealism in others.

I increasingly believe that Europe as a geopolitical entity is finished. I'd love, truly love, to believe otherwise. Though I'm not seeing anything to indicate otherwise.

I'd rather see a united Europe, under EU banner, with a single direction that is represented as a whole within NATO, rather than fragmented.

They always say that, only it does seem 'that simple' for anybody else that isn't us.

Interesting... I'm wondering whether they even have any left at this point.

The question is: do we still have the resources to do this?
We need massive public investment in innovation and emerging technologies (Semiconductors, batteries, etc...). While also simultaneously cutting down on the enormous beraucratic red tape.

They're also, usually, big fans of Mackinder's heartland thesis.

Interesting take, although I don't entirely get why that process is "neoliberal".
A term most often used to group (mainly economic) ideas under a single category that the utterer doesn't like. It has, however, a much broader intellectual tradition than most people give it credit for.

And I just don't see that happening. It feels as if most politicians and business owners in Europe are just trying to build a sort of "airbag" where they have given up on saving the whole and just hope not to get hit too hard when the inevitable crash comes. And if true, that is very, very cynical!

If we are to turn this around, we need massive public investment into software, semiconductors and battery factories, the Repeal of excessive regulation, a victory in Ukraine where we seize control of the Russian energy resources in order to make us competitive and the formation of new alliances.

The idea of a strong united Europe seems dead. As if (in the long term) the EU will fail. The very concept of a geopolitocally relevant, European power, buried. We let the Chinese take control of natural resources and the Americans of the Tech industry. We were IDIOTS! There is no other word for it!

For the very first time since the Ukraine war began, my faith in a (more or less) favorable resolution is starting to shake. We Europeans should have taken up arms against Russia the moment they set foot across that border. But no... Turns out we're "weak" after all.

This is a multifactor problem that doesn't have any sort of easy answers.

Same goes for solar panels, although they can be put on top of carparks and rooftops, making their placement options somewhat more flexible, admittedly. Still, the increased use of land would undoubtedly impact the value of land (which is already too expensive anyway...)

Also, energy production of windmills is already relatively low for the use of land it requires. In order to produce the same capacity as a single nuclear facility, you would need an incredibly large land/sea area. A commodity (especially land...) that we don't have too much of either.

Even if they don't fall away completely, the point stands. It reduces energy production. Meaning you are dependent on factors you can't control. Imagine that happening when demand rises and production can't keep up. You can't scale...
You can't really call that "strategic independence".

Also, "older" batteries, even big ones, (as you suggest) might not discharge their energy fast enough to keep up with demand. This problem is complex and not at all as easily fixable as you seem to believe.

Those car battery factories don't exist here, and a car is not a house or a factory. Those use cases are completely different.
