They're a British kind of sandwich roll. Soft white bread that's gently browned top and bottom. Nice enough but not super distinctive, really.

Rochester is famous for the Garbage Plate (which looks exactly how you think it's going to, it's fine?) and Zweigle's white hot dogs, although it SHOULD be famous for Abbot's Frozen Custard, which for my money is the best soft serve on the planet.
a paper plate of food printed with 'Nick Tahou's" "Home of the Garbage Plate". It's filled with beige and brown food piled on itself, including baked beans, macaroni salad, fried potatoes, and a red hot, cooked split on a grill and covered in chili and onions. It looks... not great.

Went last minute to Paris for the Worth Exhibition at the Petit Palais, because after almost 20 years here I have finally realised that continental Europe isn't far away, actually! SO many beautiful clothes (and designs) to be seen, it was well worth the trip! On until Sep 7 if anyone's interested.
A gold silk-satin late-1860's House of Worth and Boberg gown, with a bustle and train edged in layers of ruffles, with a low-necked evening top. Just delicious fabric details on the front of the skirt, with three layers of little sideways, I don't know, swags? and more ruffles at the bottom. An 1872 House of Worth day dress, with an a-line skirt in teal with rows of gold and multicolored embroudered bands with passamenterie across it and a same-teal fabric bunched bustle in back. The bodice has a square neckline in teal, but an asymmetric feel because the embroidered/passementerie band comes down across the front from L to R instead of staying straight. a 1903 House of Worth evening gown in deep purple velvet (with a full skirt, small bustle, and train), with white lace dripping off the short sleeves (almost lace sleeves with velvet bands over it, instead of being mostly velvet), and making the neckline straight across where the velvet is asymmetric, lowering from L shoulder to R armpit. There's stunning beading in black and sparkles on the bodice, and really lovely same color embroidery on the bottom of the skirt, along a seam where the skirt flares out even further which is lower in front and goes up towards the bustle in back. an 1896 House of Worth evening gown, of black velvet with white and white satin appliqued and silver embroidered lillies all over it, with a white satin shawl-collar neckline with black embroidered outlines on it. The dres has a big train and flares out everywhere. The embroidery is large-scale, the lily flowers are basically life sized.

Happy birthday! One of my very favorite book fair purchases, if I remember rightly:

Met this beauty outside a castle on a mountain in Albania, earlier this month.
A small turtle (probably a tortoise actually, but my knowledge is poor!), beige with black markings on its shell, walking to the left on a crazy-paved stone path in bright sunlight, slightly damp from where someone has poured water on him, to his mild irritation.

Had a lovely time at the V&A Cartier exhibit yesterday! Some beautiful stuff and some hideous stuff, but enjoyable regardless. I do wonder if anyone has managed to display jewellery in a way that it moves slightly like it would when worn, as I feel like that movement adds a LOT.
A 1920s Cartier diamond and platinum necklace with drops of huge carved emeralds with rubies set into them. A 2011 Cartier necklace (with 1930s style) of natural pearl strands held together by diamonds, with the 57-odd carat Star of Golconda diamond as the centrepiece dangle. A 1930s Cartier peridot, diamond and platinum necklace and bracelet, with absolutely MASSIVE peridot centrepiece stones, like 3cm by 2cm-ish. A swooshy 1920s Cartier diamond and platinum tiara with lots of lovely dangling diamond bits that would sway and catch the light when you moved.

... probably the circular Gallifreyan for our table names. Plus my husband's outfit change (into a Tardis suit). And the vows, and the readings, and what I wore for our first look, and the groom's cake, and our flower girl's outfit, and lots of the decor... It was just all nerdy? We are who we are!
A Dalek cake, complete with eyestalk, plunger and whisk. The Dalek is wearing little pink roses around the collar. The back of a three-year-old, wearing an enormous green tutu, a green sparkly tail, and a backwards baseball cap that reads T-Red is best! A tablecape with a blue Tardis book in front of a sign that says spoilers, surrounded by flowers and instructions to leave a message or prediction. To the right there are clay figures of a man in a grey suit and a woman in a green dress, he's holding a sonic screwdriver and she's holding a light sabre, and by their feet are a Tardis, Serenity, and a pile of books. A wedding tent tablescape, with flowers in an assortment of green and blue and purple and clear, we'll generously say vases, with green blue and purple bunting above, and a table label saying Gallifrey with circular Gallifreyan and the number 1 leaning on a candle-holder.

My much-missed Toby in his favorite napping spot. Which only lasted a few months, until the first time a guest forgot to leave the toilet lid down and the dinner party was interrupted by a *splash*, a "yowl", and a wet cat stalked out to glare at us.

Presenting the croissant that I was just forced to purchase in South Kensington, out of perverse curiosity. Normal croissant below for scale.
A croissant is at the bottom of the image, on a brown paper bag. At the top of the image is an absolutely enormous croissant, the size of a whole loaf of bread. Taste and texture are yet to be determined, but it's certainly an absolute unit of a croissant!

In an effort to not talk about politics, enjoy this kind of odd hotel hallway I stayed in in December.
A long and slightly confusing hotel hallway. The carpet is pale grey on the right and dark charcoal on the left: the walls and doors match, and the ceiling on the right half is 18 inches lower than the one on the left. There are wall sconces next to each door, in black on the right side, and in white on the left side. The whole thing makes you feel like you're tipping slightly.

I'm struggling with this too, so in an effort to be the change I want to see, here's a picture of the cocktail I had the other night: it arrived in a flower-covered birdcage in a glass shaped like a swan.
A wine-red cocktail in a glass blown to be vaguely swan-shaped (but with a heavy glass straw in it that somewhat ruins the resemblance), sits on a table in front of a white-flower-decorated birdcage just large enough to hold it. Around it are a glass of water, a basket of bread, and some butter on a piece of white marble.

Three madrassah buildings form three sides of a large open plaza, Samarkand's Registan Square, beautifully lit on a rainy night. Each building has a many story pointed-arched opening (with elaborate tilework running up both sides, above the top, and inside the arches). The buildings on both sides have a minaret behind them. The building facing the viewer has two storeys of lighted single story pointed-arched openings on both sides of the main one, each ending in a tiny tower, with their own tiny pointed-arched openings. On its left side, behind the rows of arched openings, there is a tiled turquoise dome.
