i agree changing lifestyle factors since the 50s are mostly negative for health!

but car dependence is just one of many factors, including crime fears/helicopter parenting, video games/streaming TV, processed food/dirt-cheap calories, etc.

“fit” is not really the right word to describe folks in the past.

we have an obesity problem today but that pales compared to the historical issues of malnutrition, debilitating disease, poor medicine, and physical work that destroyed bodies more than building them up.

most of grant park is too remote from transit, and the wind off the lake could be brutal. they should close streets to expand the daley plaza one.

pioneer court could also be a good spot for a 2nd market.

they couldn’t even purge it from catalonia, let alone colonial societies on the other side of the world

not in cities where riding transit is normalized.

a typical nyc or paris subway car is a rich tapestry - white folks included!

bingo, you can absolutely signal status through clothing. fine tailoring, designer brands, fur coats, etc.

this was the plan for funding Morgan IIRC, but in the end they used CMAQ funding.

it’s always better to spend OPM i guess

somewhere, a subaru-driving Boomer is seething

the sit down coffeehouse vibe is too important to sbux’ brand to ditch it completely. they’re selling the environment, not just drinks.

it doesn’t work without grab & go customers, but it doesn’t work if those are the only customers either.

i mean that’s part of the commuter rail paradigm, yeah.

suburb-suburb riders are assumed to be negligible compared to commuters heading to/from the big city.

this just allows tile and stucco guys to get in the brick game for regions without a lot of skilled masons, right?
November 24, 2025 at 4:56 AM
they’re probably not expecting anyone to “wrong way transfer” from monon branch stations towards south bend.
November 24, 2025 at 4:52 AM
i think the missing piece here is downtown hammond station, which is not part of the day 1 buildout but fully funded iirc.

looks like the schedules for monon shuttles have enough padding for another station stop, and monon direct trains skip gateway bc they will stop at the downtown station.

for the orange line, it’s really just western and kedzie that are in an industrial corridor (and even western has lots of nearby residential)

all the rest are basically the same station locations you’d get with an archer ave subway!

they don’t call it the racetrack for nothing

when demand is soft (e.g. Monday, Friday AM) metropolis tech should in theory lower all the rates to increase occupancy and revenue-maxx.
November 19, 2025 at 4:59 PM
i wonder if they’d be better off running a dinky to five points.
November 19, 2025 at 2:12 PM
it already has. the posted rates may still be high, but most garage operators offer discounted rates thru the apps.
November 19, 2025 at 1:59 PM
biden being an exception!
November 19, 2025 at 1:43 PM
this happens every 4 years.

repubs threaten to kill transit and/or amtrak so that dems settle for peanuts in the bill and it’s still “bipartisan”.
November 19, 2025 at 1:42 PM
a tasteful system of half height doors could work well.

weese’s original kit of parts included a distinctive mezzanine railing that could be adapted too.
