The interaction on this piece through this comment is the most anyone's ever really interacted with a personal post. Thanks Goth Friend! Here's an update. Just highlights yo go. This is the first time I've even attempted painting on canvas.

Here is where I stopped for the day. This #workinprogress is about 4 hours of brushtime (I'm keeping a running total for myself). I start my first art class in January, so far this is the first one I've put on a 13x18 cm canvas panel. As soon as I switched to light values, I got super scared.

DAY 8

I've been teaching myself to oil paint. Today is my 8th day painting. I decided to follow the advice of #paintcoach and practice a portrait in mono. I found an old Twitter post of his from 2010. "Cadmium Red Deep."

DAY 7

Managed to get sick with the crud for three days of Thanksgiving weekend and did no painting at all. It felt good to get back to practice!

Today I did a 2 hour brushtime practice sphere with left over colors on my palette and a bad brush.

The part I am the most bummed about with this practice piece is the background. I think I got the darkest shadows mostly correct, but nothing about mine looks like folds in cloth. Might do a practice tomorrow of just draped cloth. I

DAY 6

Feeling like I jumped the shark to landscape, I reeled myself back and tried to paint my chrysocolla necklace made in Jerome, AZ. When the stone has red like this, it is called "Sonoran Sunrise".

3 hrs. Brushtime

Work in progress.

The exercise was about trying to capture shapes in swatches of color with one oversized brush.

Day 5

After spending a day working on #paintcoach videos and reading color/ palette theory, I decided to try my first landscape. I took a picture of the Superstitions behind my house after work, and just tried to get a solid representation with 1, 3/4" flat brush.

I'm an academic, nerdy kinda guy. I love learning stuff. A lot of my adult life has kinda left me bored. Life was so much more interesting when i was learning; dreaming. So I've decided to teach myself #oilpainting. Today, is for #colortheory.

Day 4

Paint an apple in 10 strokes was today's practice challenge following Paint Coach on YouTube. I decided to do yesterday's apple, and I gave myself 15 strokes.

I completed my piece in 18 brush strokes.
I also need some more mixing practice. The darker red esp

Day 3

Second practice piece.

Using the same photo of fruit, I switched it to grayscale and then tried to mix all tones from Ultramarine Blue & White.

The fourth picture is yesterday's full color practice, switched to grayscale to check improved values.

2.5 hours brush time.

Practice asked for two layers of lightening values. I got the lime green hue wrong. After adding the highlight layers, I blended with a dry brush.
About 2.5 hrs practice time today.

Maybe after a year these logs will be cool to look back on.

First Practice Piece.

@paintcoach

Supposed to be aiming at defining values.

Notes. Build confidence in brush strokes. Don't be afraid to mix more paint. I feel like I thinned out the paint too much in places.

Tips/ Pointers Welcome!
