Oh I misread. Thanks for the correction. Can you read when you’re using it? It seems kind of great.

Everyone should do what they can sustain. For me, I think the main advantage of an exercise bike is that I could read while biking. The main disadvantage is you don’t get much muscle building, especially core, upper body, & arms. For all in 1 activities and low injury risk, I think it’s swim or row.

If anyone has advice on submitting to APSR via the Registered Report track, I'd appreciate a DM. docs.google.com/document/u/0...

bsky.app/profile/soci... he’s right. And every rowing stroke is basically a sit up, so… (it’s not actually a sit up, please have good form, look at YouTube videos, film yourself, etc etc)

You have to have a strong core. Bad things start happening to your spine if you don't have a strong core. Having a strong core after the fact will not fix those bad things. So important not to get to that point. Take from me.

You’re not really exercising for yourself right now (though there are real perks now). You are exercising for yourself in >10 years. You need to get stronger and fitter to improve your quality of life from 45-death. Not doing this now will bite you later.

If you don’t yet exercise, strongly consider starting regular indoor rowing. It’s not fun, but:
1. It’s a full body workout, muscle and cardio
2. It can be done in about 20 min/day
3. It’s not so hard to fit a C2 erg in many homes
4. It’s low impact and your chance of injury is low

Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

It’s nice to see the CEO is at least aware of and seemingly opposed to the culture problems on here. Gives me hope.

He did specify d6. Turns out the kids are playing some kind of gambling game at school.
ryancbriggs.net
My kid just asked me what number is the most likely to come up if he rolls two dice and I’ve never been more ready for something in my life.
ryancbriggs.net
Yeah, that’s it. I got confirmation from a few people that it is not a scam and that I should probably go. I’d never heard of it before.

Can anyone tell me what “social science foo” is? Some kind of workshop? Anyone have experience? DM or reply 🙏

I feel confused. You're going to layer them into a lasagna no?

But I do think that you are describing a task that modern LLMs could do very well if given the right guidance and scaffolding
ryancbriggs.net
There is some work in initial testing, but most of the time and money is in building out validation datasets. I wouldn’t trust us (or anyone) to just run this over a bunch of article and produce output that anyone should seriously use.
ryancbriggs.net
Yeah, I just finished writing a grant to help us fund a large expansion of this, including extracting data from all statistical tables in every article, and a big part of my pitch was around lowering the barriers to meta-analysis and systemic reviews
ryancbriggs.net
Yep that’s exactly right
ryancbriggs.net
Maybe we’re not pitching it quite right, but it’s tasks like:
* does the article use x method?
* list the countries covered by the dataset, if it exists
* give the start and end year of the data
* is the analysis pre-registered?

It’s ballpark 50 such fields, and we’ll have it for ~all of PS
ryancbriggs.net
The RA task is busywork. It’s not interesting intellectual labour. We want “does this paper contain a regression? Yes/No” outsourced to the machines.

I’m really excited about this project. We’re carefully using and validating LLMs to code many features of academic articles. We’re going to scan basically all of political science, and at APSA we’re going to show preliminary results in 6 top journals.

Come see our work on using LLMs to track political science research methods at APSA at 4pm today!
