One of my latest bits of research exploring women’s perceptions of hobby board game culture. Overall the culture can ‘appear’ very intimidating & women face extra barriers, but there’s a range of inclusive things happening too! Free to read here 😉 journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

The work of our @ryanscoatsphd.bsky.social features in "Drei ist nicht immer einer zu viel".

The BlueSky post about this feature has an age filter on it. That might make it more intriguing...

Publication acceptance! As a follow up and complimenting our work on women in board game culture (journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....), this next article will explore how women navigate and understand sexist encounters.

Like it or not AI is here and will change academia for both better and worse. I've found it to be a hugely useful tool, but see so many academic dismiss it outright (often on moral grounds). I wonder how long it's really practical to resist these changes www.timeshighereducation.com/campus/lets-...
Let’s look at AI as a reasoning partner, not a shortcut
The latest reasoning AI models, such as DeepSeek, offer an opportunity for universities to strengthen critical thinking in the next generation of workers

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”

To repeat: "A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for."

Today's university slashing and burning is Edinburgh, where about 10% of the budget will be cut. There'll be another case every single day until UK govts actually do something. A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for.

Googling an academic to request a chapter they’d written and it turns out they’ve gone to prison for murder! Not what I was expecting. Wild

Had a medical emergency with a student today (they where ok in the end). Scary as hell. Make sure you know what you’d do if something bad happens because any mandated training you might have had will go straight out your head/not have covered it!

Sounds really interesting 🤔

Sending book pitches to agents is eerily similar to applying for academic jobs. They all want virtually the same information but in ever so slightly different formats. Oh and there are no academic jobs, maybe book publishing is doing better 😂 🙃

You know twitter is dying when all of the pornbots and only fans accounts have come here. Good luck to them I say!

Just recorded a podcast where I was asked, ‘as your research stemmed from a personal experience, what did you learn about yourself through doing it?’ Such a great question and not one I’d ever really thought about!
