Attending “Exploring AI in VFX,” sponsored by the New York section of the Visual Effects Society. (The walk-in music is Starship’s “We Built This City.” Do they know I’ve just arrived from the Left Coast?)

“I practice hope like an Olympic sport.” –Katharine Hayhoe at @amnh.org during New York Climate Week
Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe in front of a slide that quotes Sara Peach: “The goal of the conversation is not to tell people about climate change. It's to expand the number of people in the conversation.”

Attending #LPS25 in Vienna. It feels somewhat insulting to subject 6,000+ attendees to an AI-generated “welcome” in an opening plenary. Like, you wouldn’t take the time to shoot a video but you’re going to have your AI clone take up our collective time? Am I being a curmudgeon?

There are LOTS of ways to #StandUpforScience!

Take your pick from our menu of actions: www.standupforscience.net/summer-fight...

And check out our event host guide: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Menu of action: We are in this fight for the long-haul. Some days are protest days and some days are 5calls.org days.

From @aaas.org: “We can’t let passive things happen, like the idea that we’re not going to obligate funds that you already appropriated, destroy something that we’ve built over 80 years. Because if we allow it to break, we can’t just put it back together again next year.”

For the next several months, I’ll be at the amazing Visualization Center C in Norrköping, Sweden! I have a chance to work with the talented team here on some exciting visualization projects, including those that touch on climate and the environment.

This Tour of the Universe is one of my favorite #dataviz that I ever helped produce. Take a journey through the observable universe and back in time.
Thank you @ryanwyatt.bsky.social and @marksubbarao.bsky.social two masters of the genre ✨

At @calacademy.bsky.social this morning, we hosted an amazing talk by Lori Fogarty, who heads up the Oakland Museum of California. For folks in the museum field, this talk is absolutely inspiring—to think about how we exist in and for our communities! I recommend watching.

I talked about “Immersive Dome Experiences for Accelerating Science,” research opportunities using planetariums as collaborative immersive visualization environments. The title references an Astro2020 paper I coauthored with some pretty amazing folks!

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Shanghai Astronomy Museum and speak at their symposium on the future of planetariums! The scale of projects in China boggles the mind…
Exterior photo of the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, with a large spherical dome in the distance, part of an extensive modern building with curvilinear design. A grassy area in front of the building features the name of the museum in large characters, both in Chinese and English. An image of a lecture hall. On the left, presenter in front of a large LED screen, about three meters tall, displaying an astronomical visualization. On the right, an audience of approximately fifty people. A telescope of slightly unusual, late 19th-century design, painted white, inside a dome from the same era.

Now that everyone is starting to show up here, I guess I should post something. What better than a photo of Nigel helping me organize my office?
