Fact Check: FALSE!
But still a great story.
1974 Fleer Laughlin Back of card reads:

Thorpe Homered Into Three States In One Game!

When "the world's greatest athlete," Jim Thorpe, was stripped of his 1912 Olympic medals because of a few pro baseball games at the Carlisle Indian School, manager John McGraw hurried to sign him for the Giants, McGraw knew he'd be a great attraction. It turned out he was a greater attraction than a baseball player, he did have one fantastic day on a spring exhibition tour. In a game in Texas, at the convergence of the Oklahoma and Arkansas borders, Big Jim homered into three states in the one game. His first drive cleared the leftfield fence into Oklahoma, his second the rightfield fence into Arkan-sas, and his third was an inside-the-park round-tripper-in Texas!

Here is how the 426-card T212 Obak set distributes its 271 different subjects across the three years 1909-1911. For example, 32 subjects appeared in all three series while 55 subjects were 1910-only. Longer article coming soon.

100 years ago today, these Hall of Fame greats square off…on the mound! In an 8-inning season finale called for darkness, the aces combine for three scoreless innings. The game also resulted in Cobb’s only career save (retroactively), however sketchy.

Honestly, if I had to pick just one set to spend the rest of my hobby life on, writing about it, researching it, collecting it, just staring at it, it’d be 1952 Topps. Nothing else comes close.

Speaking of George Sisler, Jr., he also appears on the most needless nickname card of all time. “Hi, I’m Barry. But please, just call me Barry.”
“Hi, I’m Barry Foote. But please, call me Barry.”

🚨 TRIGGER WARNING ‼️

#OTD in 1978 Bucky Dent broke a lot of hearts in Beantown. His attempt at reconciliation a decade later (sharing a baseball card with the son of Boston Braves legend George Sisler) largely fell flat on all but @seank138.bsky.social.

I’ve only written one article for the @sabrbbcards.bsky.social Blog, but it was about Ángel Scull’s 1954 Topps card and how I got back into collecting. sabrbaseballcards.blog/2024/11/11/a...
