Cat lady, bunny mom, backyard chicken tender, slow runner, nature lover, artist, AuDHD, aspriring carpenter, and avid reader. Trying to keep a bit of the old equality state spirit alive in central Wyoming.
It made the divide between the people who were already self absorbed and those of us who aren't or can't afford to be greater. As a public servant I can't tell you how many times I was yelled at by entitled people for upholding a road closure that the community on the other side asked for.

I'm trying to say there is more nuance than many people realize. Not every fee area accepts the passes. Another example is Mount Rushmore where the concesioner charges a parking fee and passes aren't valid. What location did you present the pass?

First, make sure they were at a federal fee area. So many people don't know the difference. In Yellowstone we were constantly explaining to people that the pass would not be valid in Custer STATE park. I had to tell my parents and brother to put away their senior and military passes at Crazy Horse.

My guess is you were not at a federal fee area that accepts the pass. Lots of people think state parks and county parks are the same. Any federal fee collector will have seen hundreds if not thousands of veteran passes. Also passes aren't good for tours and such. Vet passes are still valid.

Luckily, the senior lifetime pass stays the same for years at a time. Generally only the annual passes change each year (it helps fee collectors quickly identify things at the gate). I used be be a fee trainer in a national park.

I'm a former interpretive ranger in our first national park. I can tell you they were set up as vacation spots for the rich. Only wealthy people in the early days could take a month off, travel by train, and hire a guide to visit.

As a former trainer for fee collectors in one of the 4 most visited parks, NPS keeps zero records of who passes belong to. This is why you have to show ID with the pass and the fee collector compares the 2 signatures. I'm not saying the idea is great. I'm really thankful I no longer work there.

Raise your hand if you are even more grateful not to be working in a fee both anymore. 🖐

The national parks have ALWAYS been for the wealthy.

This is the same entitlement that had my neighbor parked in my parway for about 24 hours. I had already asked the neighbors' friends on the other side not to park there. Didn't see this one. Put rocks out when I noticed the truck was gone. Planning to fill it with native plants as soon as I can.

Obviously there need to be follow up questions for clarification: what about pretending to be a horse (yes, a real human friend and I spent many a recess galloping around). Or, did you plan out how you would care for a real horse in your suburban home if your parents would give in and buy you one?
