Framing themselves as "doormats" makes it seem like their kids WANT something from them. When their adult kids literally just want to be left alone.

They used to only know what we explicitly told them (where we went on vacation, that our son had a birthday party, etc.). Now we have to BLOCK them everywhere, a clear sign of being ejected from someone's life that's harder for them to wave away.

When I did it, I just changed my phone number. I'm not sure people today are "explaining" themselves more often, but mental health knowledge is now mainstream... they know when family doesn't feel good and they have the language for it.
