“We want people to heal and grow and have a good life and serve their community well.” - Scott Semple, Retired Commissioner of the Connecticut DoC

Happy and healthy correctional officers can have a huge impact on the way a prison functions.

As Dr. Shaneva McReynolds of @famm.org says, by addressing the understaffing crisis and creating better environments in prisons, there can be “a harvest” for both incarcerated people and staff.

When prisons are understaffed, people inside are often locked down for days or weeks. As Santia Nance shares, this means:

📞 No calls
🫂 No visits
💙 No programs
🩺 No medical care

Rather than accept poor conditions in prisons, people are beginning to recognize that this harm is not an unavoidable cost but a crisis we must confront.

With this growing awareness, there is hope that there can be real, positive change in our approach to incarceration and community safety.

When prisons lack the resources for mental health care, education, and rehab programs, both staff and incarcerated people suffer.

Without real support, people leave unprepared, return to prison at higher rates, and our communities pay the price. This failure fuels a harmful cycle we must break.

Our nation’s prisons are dangerously understaffed and overcrowded.

To shed light on this urgent problem, we collected and analyzed more than a decade of data, the findings of which are detailed in a brief now available on our website: saferprisonssafercommunities.org/resource/by-...

The understaffing of correctional officers is compromising the nation’s prison system and safety in our communities.

Former Connecticut DOC commission Scott Semple knows firsthand that this isn’t just a staffing problem - it’s a crisis affecting public health, rehabilitation, and community safety.

Correctional officers are trained to risk their lives every day, but are not prepared for the emotional toll of working in poor conditions.

As Stephen B. Walker of OVU has witnessed, real mental health support is often missing, leaving staff to struggle alone. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Chronic understaffing, forced overtime, and poor mental health support leave correctional staff overwhelmed.

These conditions fuel PTSD, burnout, and suicide—yet, the system keeps recruiting into the same broken structure instead of fixing the root issues.

Today’s correctional staff face intense scrutiny and rising expectations while working in dangerously understaffed environments.

When correctional staff are overworked and burnt out, maintaining safety becomes nearly impossible.

How can correctional staff be expected to facilitate rehabilitation and maintain safety when they are working excessive overtime, feel undervalued, and are under-resourced?

Incarcerated people are being set up to fail after their release because our prison systems are designed primarily for confinement. Rehabilitation is essential to safer prisons and safer communities—yet it remains underappreciated.
