fancy technique only gets you so far... people care much more about what the art is saying than how "pretty" it looks. like you say, people like being invited into a drawing/painting, but artists are often scared of opening up and being vulnerable when they're doing their "real" art

i constantly see artists lamenting that their high-effort glossy rendered paintings get less attention than their pencil doodles... meanwhile, if you actually look at the subject/themes, the glossy art is soulless while the doodles are raw and real and actually communicate something
