Monique snorted. “Just don’t trip and break your ankle out there in the dark.” Harmonia’s grin widened. “I won’t,” she said. She thought of the bulleted list of geology puns in her phone and plucked out the one that had been the easiest to memorize: “Hey, what do you call a rock who’s a faker?” Monique raised her eyebrows. “A shamrock,” Harmonia said. Monique groaned in disgusted dismay, but the corners of her mouth twitched upward as she fought to suppress a smile. “You wanna know the last time rock puns were popular?” the geologist demanded. “The Stone Age?” Harmonia guessed. “Yes! Now get the fuck out and do your fieldwork. I can’t believe you,” Monique said, her smile widening as she turned back to her laptop and put her earbuds back in. Harmonia was all but skipping with glee as she left the canteen through the back door and stepped into the nighttime gloom of Malamuru.
