Marjorie Taylor Greene: “I’m not some sort of blind slave to the president, and I don’t think anyone should be.”

“I serve in Congress. We’re a separate branch of the government, and I’m not elected by the president.”

Once a loyal foot soldier for Trump, Marjorie Taylor Greene is increasingly bucking her party
From the Gaza war to the Epstein files to the government shutdown, the MAGA-aligned congresswoman has grown critical of her fellow Republicans.

Chuck Schumer just now: “Speaker Johnson has been a massive roadblock to getting anything done. His members aren't even here... He's not serious, and he doesn't give a damn. Instead of doing his job, he's spreading lies—typical Johnson MO to distract from his total incompetence to get a deal.”

Escalating rhetoric between Mike Johnson and Chuck Schumer. Johnson has been saying Schumer forced this shutdown to protect himself from a future primary challenge by AOC; today Schumer singles out Johnson as the central obstacle to reopening the government.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries: “A one-year extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits is not acceptable. It's a non-starter. It's a non-starter. It was introduced by the same people who just permanently extended massive tax breaks for their billionaire donors.”

Speaker Johnson responds to MTG saying GOP leaders don’t have a health care plan: “Congresswoman Greene does not serve on the committees of jurisdiction that deal with those specialized issues. And she's probably not read in on some of that, because they've still been in their silos.”

false my take is absolutely fantastic
sahilkapur.bsky.social
Respectfully, this take is quite silly. Barack Obama embraced the term “Obamacare” in 2011. Democratic supporters of the law call it Obamacare all the time.
bluedotvet.bsky.social
Stop calling it Obama Care and start calling it the Affordable Care Act. Calling it Obama Care sends a subliminal message of racism and Islamophobia to those who hate.

DAY 7: Two significant developments in the shutdown standoff, including MAGA firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene breaking with the GOP on Obamacare
sahilkapur.bsky.social
Rep. @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social says a 1-year extension of expiring ACA tax credits is “not acceptable.”

There’s a bipartisan House bill to do that, which 14 Republicans have signed on to.

“It’s a nonstarter,” he says, contrasting it with GOP lawmakers extending the Trump tax cuts permanently.

On ACA, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene tells me the rising cost of health care is "one of the top issues I hear about in my district." She says she's fighting on this because it is already too expensive "and increasing health insurance premiums is going to crush people." www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene breaks with the GOP on Obamacare, calling to avoid premium hikes
Greene said she's "not a fan" of Obamacare but complained that her "own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE" if Congress ignores the issue.

👀 Marjorie Taylor Greene breaks with Republicans on Obamacare funding, saying she’s not a fan of the law but demands action to prevent a premium hike. “I’m absolutely disgusted that health insurance premiums will DOUBLE if the tax credits expire this year.” She says GOP leaders don’t have a plan.

Unusual to see Republican senators flatly reject a Trump claim. But several did just that today after he said there are negotiations with Democrats on health care, a central D demand in shutdown standoff. Multiple Dem and GOP senators said no such thing is happening. www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...
U.S. shutdown drags on as Trump flummoxes senators with health care claim
The stalemate continued Monday with another round of failed votes as President Trump claimed negotiations were taking place, which senators in both parties denied.

DAY 6: The US government shutdown drags on with no end in sight

Another Senate vote series fails, with zero movement among senators.

Meanwhile, Trump claims they are negotiating on health care with Democrats.

Dem and GOP senators say that’s bogus.

This strikes me as correct. The data show that a significant share of the Dem internal unfavs comes from voters who see their party as an ineffective opposition to Trump. If that’s your view you’ll probably still be motivated to turn out and vote against his party.

This data is probably going to get distorted but I think the context here is much more about incumbents in primaries than enthusiasm for general elections.

CBS News poll shows the Democratic Party's favorable rating at 34%, with 66% disapproving. Again, part of the reason is weak approval with their own base — 1 in 5 Democrats view it unfavorably. That's twice the share of Republicans with an unfavorable view of their party.

Day 6 of the government shutdown.

No end in sight.

Trump dodges on ACA funding extension, key sticking point: "We want to fix it so it works." Doesn't say how.

A fifth poll shows Trump/GOP taking more blame than Dems for the shutdown.

More Senate votes today.

U.S. shutdown enters Day 6 as Trump dodges on Obamacare funds
The stalemate continues. Leaders of the two parties dug in on their irreconcilable positions over the weekend. And the House doesn't plan to come to Washington this week.

Trump still hasn’t released a health care alternative, despite many promises to do so. The last major plan he endorsed was AHCA to repeal the ACA, which died in 2017 after John McCain’s thumbs down.

Donald Trump, asked whether he’s open to extending Obamacare subsidies, doesn’t say yes or no. “We want to fix it so it works,” he says. “It's not working. Obamacare has been a disaster for the people, so we want to have it fixed so it works.”
