'The Open Window.' (1907) Much like his friend Vilhelm Hammershøi, Carl Holsøe is celebrated for his depictions of sparse interiors, which convey stillness and introspection.

Four years before John Constable painted this in 1821, John Keats was writing about 'Negative Capability: 'when man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts without any irritable reaching after fact & reason.' This is what negative capability looks like in paint.

Fresh off the Easel!

I visited Etretat to gather inspiration and was drawn inland, to the rolling hills covered in oaks and farmland. This painting captures a misty morning bathed in golden hour light.

This painting celebrates everything I love about the fall. The light shining through the maple trees creates intriguing patterns of light and shadow across the grass.

Like a lot of his post-war British contemporaries, Carel Weight tried to convey feelings of tranquility and reassurance in his work. In 'High Tea,' (c1955) the stilled moment allows us to create our own narrative.

A superb interior from 1932 by Leo Whelan. He was taught by William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art - Orpen took inspiration from Velasquez, Whelan preferred a style in the manner of Vermeer and the early Dutch masters.
