Four years before John Constable painted this in 1821, John Keats was writing about 'Negative Capability: 'when man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts without any irritable reaching after fact & reason.' This is what negative capability looks like in paint.

I visited Etretat to gather inspiration and was drawn inland, to the rolling hills covered in oaks and farmland. This painting captures a misty morning bathed in golden hour light.

Etretat is one of the sites along the Normandy coast in France that Claude Monet famously painted. I visited Etretat to gather inspiration myself, but I was drawn not to the coastal cliffs, but inland, to the layers of rolling hills covered in oak trees and farmland. When I was there, I met a man from Portland who said he drove out every week to see the sunset from Crown Point. From the 180-degree sunset I experienced, I can see why! A superb interior from 1932 by Leo Whelan. He was taught by William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art - Orpen took inspiration from Velasquez, Whelan preferred a style in the manner of Vermeer and the early Dutch masters.
