Specific places that are good: Bang Brewing, Lake Monster, anywhere with an active patio or front entrance right by the bike racks, any place that doesn't mind if you roll your bike inside if you need/prefer to.
Bad places: White Squirrel, Blackstack, anywhere with a "wheelbender" type bike rack.

Some people will just lock a front wheel, which often has a quick release, so a thief can steal the rest of the bike in seconds. IMO, the Sheldon Brown method for locking is the best in most situations.

I believe either solid U-locks or a heavy duty chain lock are a must. They cost more than a cable lock, but it's the difference between someone stealing your bike with a bolt cutter (or even just a wire snips if you work at it) vs needing an angle grinder. Locking method and position matters too.

Like others have mentioned, it's nice when locations have good visibility, either through a window or at least where there's decently high foot traffic. Quality of rack makes a huge difference. Some places have racks that are basically impossible to lock to securely, like the one below.

We do a monthly ride! Sometimes 3rd Wed as @bcmfietser.bsky.social mentioned, sometimes different days. We have a monthly newsletter you can sign up for that has details! This month is March 23, 1pm, meet along the Sam Morgan Trail under the High Bridge (roughly the High Bridge Dog Park Parking).
