I know one of their journalists went on to be a successful game indie game developer, while Yahtzee has had some success as an author. They had some really high caliber people.

🥲

Oh, finally, I have a use for the vomit emoji 🤢🤮

I remember when the Escapist first came out - they were very avant garde and dedicated to doing real gaming journalism. Not just reviews and such, but philosophical pieces.

It's sad to see they've been reduced to whatever THIS is:

Mainly, sir, mainly....

Haha, indeed. Not quite the point I was trying to make there. I tend to be verbose and this medium doesn't allow for that.

I was attempting to highlight the selective failure of imagination, coupled with ignorance of the reality of the era, which did have plenty of women in positions of power.

..and who didn't think very highly of women. He was able to combine these passions by kicking Godwin's with back until it met his criteria.

We can just as equally imagine a world in which engineers built appropriate safety factors into the ship's fuel supply. Or a different story which explains why no such factor exists and yet pilots were still willing to fly with that risk.

I imagine that Campbell was the sort who liked to be right..

...several drafts in which the pilot figured out a way to make her survive. That suggests to me that Campbell had an axe to grind that wasn't necessarily about math or science.

It's all a contrivance. It's an imaginary story taking place in an imaginary future with imaginary people.
February 9, 2026 at 4:54 AM
I'm not sure that it was trying to make that point as much as a point about how girls/women didn't understand science and therefore therefore must die because "facts don't care about your feelings".

As Doctrow relates, Godwin didn't intend for the girl to die and Campbell sent back ...

I find arguments about this story very similar to a certain class of incel who argues that "women wouldn't do X" in a pseudo-medieval fantasy setting, completely ignoring the magic and dragons in the same story. (And their complete lack of knowledge about what the medieval period was actually like.)

I think Cory Doctrow's take on this story is compelling:

He argues that the setup in the story is a moral hazard - it's specifically written to justify immoral behavior - murder - under the guise of "science!"

Yup, mine was canceled as well. Looks like Amazon had some issues. No worries, I'm still on board! Can't wait for that next book!

I just today figured out how to disable auto play on all the streaming services I use. I don't even want to watch the credits, I just don't need the anxiety of grabbing for the remote before it starts up the next episode.

My local city has a for-pay gym, but it's SO much cheaper than the other local offerings that it might as well be free. We have 3 people on the plan for ~$60/month, which also includes other city pools and even a batting cage. Love my city!
