We've been examining portraits in our collections, especially this one of Adeline Cable (1864–1944) pioneering nurse who served during the Boer War in South Africa. In 1907 she became Matron of Salisbury Infirmary, a position she held for 18 years, salisburyhealthcarehistory.uk/adeline-cable/

We're researching Salisbury Infirmary's Black List that documents patients barred from entry between 1820-1914. It contains stories that tell so much about our society. Many were thefts or absconding, others are more curious such as Mary Moody in 1853, recommended by Lady Bath, listed as imposter!

2/2 Note the 'women driver' reference for 1943 electric vehicles and pictured in the illustration! During World War II, women were actively encouraged to take jobs—especially in industries and roles traditionally held by men—due to the massive labour shortages caused by men going off to fight.

1/2 We found this interesting advert for electric Vehicles in a news clipping from 1943. Electric vehicles were rare, however during World War II, fuel rationing and military needs spurred some interest in alternatives such as delivery vehicles (like milk floats or small utility trucks)
