🧩Learning to talk & read isn’t just about effort or teaching—it’s shaped by biology, experience & context

🧠Our new review links genetics, neuroscience, psychology & education to show why some children find language or reading easier.

🖼️genes→brain→cognition→behaviour 🧵👇
Figure 2 in the review: Levels of analysis from genes and brain systems to cognition and behaviour.
The child both influences and is influenced by parents through genetically shaped interactions, and by the wider school and social environment.

I've been working with the UK Young Academy THRIVE team on how we can make workplaces more neuro-inclusive.

We are an interdisciplinary group of researchers and professionals, obviously including neurodivergent researchers, who are keen to see change

Absolutely agree, this is such a good point - and not an easy ask at all!

It’s not just what you read—it’s whether you chose to read it.

In our new paper out at QJEP 🎉 we show that:
👉 Having a choice over what you read makes reading more enjoyable
👉 …and makes people willing to pay more for books
EXPRESS: Providing choice enhances reading motivation - Amrita Bains, Carina Spaulding, Jessie Ricketts, Saloni Krishnan, 2025
Multiple literacy programmes embed choice of reading material into their programmes, as this is believed to enhance motivation for reading. Yet, this practice h...

If no resolution can be reached, and given its an optional scan for research purposes with no direct benefit to the child, I’d cancel the scan. 2/2
salonikrishnan.bsky.social
Gosh this is tough. I think it would be fine to schedule/ complete the scan on the basis of one parent (this would be the case for routine medical appointments). However if there is dissent there should be some attempt to mediate.. ½

Lack of female-only research, but also lack of representation of women in mixed trials, and even less sex-disaggregated analysis when women are included. Lots of work still to do @messagetgi.bsky.social
