I happen to know someone in Utah in the early 2000s who was very religious but also had seemingly no problem with pirating software.

I think you may be misunderstanding his post. He’s not saying that crunch is good or acceptable. He is saying the industry won’t end it of its own accord. There will need to be external pressure to end it, and the terminology used to oppose it should change to better reflect the true reasons why.
