🌉 bridged from https://social.running.cafe/@sam on the fediverse by https://fed.brid.gy/
I have decided that I am going to shut down https://social.running.cafe in 3 months (15th September), or whenever the last active user has migrated off.

It’s been fun being an instance admin, but it never really got the traction I would have liked (3-4 active users) and having recently taking a […]

I'm trying out #snac on a very underpowered Raspberry Pi and importing all the people I follow. Please do not be alarmed if you get a random follow request from a new account. 😄

I finding migrating my sad abandoned blog (https://cableshaghetti.dev) from a super outdated Jekyll install to Marmite (https://rochacbruno.github.io/marmite/ ) by @bruno.

I love the simplicity of Marmite, I don’t have to worry about a mountain of Ruby dependencies getting out of date or my […]

I was not a regular reader but I felt duty bound to find a final issue of Linux Format. I’m really enjoying all the nostalgia they’ve packed in.

Ffs! My vernier caliper, which I think originated from Lidl about 10-12 years ago, just decided to die right in the middle of measuring my valve shims. 🤬

On the upside I now know how to remove shims from an engine.

Time to go tool shopping…

Ok how cool is this?

I have one IPv4 address and want to terminate TLS/HTTPS on different machines depending on the hostname.

It turns out Nginx can detect the hostname and route the traffic without having the cert/terminating the traffic. Magic! […]

Today in Sam's random side-quests, I have determined that it is possible to get 1100 requests per second out of an original 256MB RAM Raspberry Pi from 2011.

The setup is Lighttpd on Alpine Linux (diskless in-memory mode) and the Pi is overclocked from […]

I’ve finally got around to measuring the valve clearances on the crap #fiat.

I think I’m measuring them correctly, in which case they are all quite loose. Should be .4 exhaust, .3 intake.

Can someone who has a clue tell me if this is vaguely normal…I […]

I think Amber is quite content with her life. I’m doing my best to have a quiet day today after a week away in the Netherlands for work; she is helping.

What an insanely busy weekend I’ve had! Itchen Valley Parkrun with the boys, hanging out with my wife’s family at a different country park and then a Eurovision party yesterday.

Romsey Relay Marathon with my wife and the kids most of the day today.

I […]

I moved the drives for my main home server into a new case/motherboard/cpu/ram on Wednesday night.

Since then it's done this a few times and crashed (at least it drops of the network and won't respond to the power button to gracefully shut down).

Can […]

Would anyone like a free Brother HL2040 mono laser printer? I’m in southern Hampshire but will be in South Wales in June.

It works fine and I’ve used it with the brlaser driver and CUPS for network printing. However it has a (probably fixable) problem […]

[Peloton/US Politics Rant]

I just love that there are people who join Peloton classes and don’t pedal just to show off their MAGA hashtag.

What exactly do they think they are achieving? I guess forcing people like me to think about the state of the world when I’m trying to exercise…

I’m pretty pleased with the results of my work on the Fiat over the past few days.

I cleaned it with my son yesterday, and it’s far from perfect but I think it looks quite presentable now. 🙂

Other highlights include new gear knob, new plates, new […]

In my day job, I work for a media company that focuses on the toy industry.

Apropos of nothing, I decided to add the Mastodon plushie (aka #plushtodon) to the latest products on our Toy Insider website.

Please boost this so our editors will frustratingly tell me to stop trying to make Mastodon […]

I have hand cramp but not for any fun reasons.

I’ve been trying to make the headlight on the crap Fiat vaguely transparent with a drill and a lot of sanding and polishing compound.

I ran out of drill battery but think I’ve got most of the way there.

(I […]

The chav plates have been replaced on the crap Fiat. 🎉

They say a lot about the previous owner, who I dislike a little more every day I work on this car.

Fitting the new Alpine ones will have to wait until tomorrow, when I’m […]

Are there any #zfs #openzfs experts on here who could help me explain what on earth is going on with the disk utilisation of my Minio dataset?
