This is correct, both domestically and in foreign relations. The US is going to be less powerful (economically and militarily) and have much less influence. For generations.

Why would Trump choose to nominate people whose independence can be compromised (and possibly already has been)? These nominations suggest that people who are capable of blackmail are influencing Trump’s picks in an effort to get people they can influence into top government positions.

Blackmail can ensure loyalty. It is also a way for a foreign power to influence the US government.
