The type of shit I really want to say.
How do you come to terms with the fact that social media has played a huge part in the massive divide in “left vs right” ideology, hateful and radical rhetoric, and isolation and lonliness … and still continue to participate in it? Asking for a friend 👀 It’s nothing but a series of echo chambers driven by an algorithm that reduces you to a market segment for advertisers. It’s completely and horribly unethical and manipulative but we are so absorbed, so addicted to the validation it gives us, that we ignore how broken it is. The algorithm rewards and pushes sensational material, which is often not even based in reality (even more so now that fact checking is gone). So mush of it is bot-generated content that is created to manipulate populations . This material proliferates within the echo chambers which are affirmed by it and affirm it in turn as users interact with it. The misinformation spreads, like a wildfire, until it can do maximum damage. What sort of damage? Psychological manipulation, fear and hoplessness, isolation from true community, dissemination of capitalist ideology, manipulation of political outcomes. If you think I’m being dramatic I’m only just glossing over it. These social media companies have ONE goal. Profit. Make as much profit as possible. What is the ceiling? There is none. It will become more and more manipulative and unethical because the resource it needs is YOUR ATTENTION. And it will continue its drive towards indefinite growth at any cost.
