The fall colours are slower this year, more subdued overall, but just as life-affirming as ever. I feel like I'm returning to myself. 🍁

I wanted to set an alarm to "start dinner," but I guess my phone's autosuggest thinks that's boring?

Draft complete (please read that as a Warcraft II orc). Say hello to The Other Air. The science-fantasy novella that was supposed to be a quick project became a trilogy rooted in Finnish & Filipino myth, examining what we sacrifice to find belonging and how we're changed by the natural world.

So happy to hold a copy of Lindsay Zier-Vogel's The Fun Times Brigade in my hands. It’s gorgeous - and look at those endpapers oh my god 😍.

Is it too much to use my FTB bookmark and carry my copy of FTB in my FTB tote? I *am* a Lindsay Zier-Vogel fangirl so it would be appropriate!

I was happy to preorder Teri Vlassopoulos’ Living Expenses from my local indie bookstore The Book Wardrobe - especially as the author’s Filipino, the editor’s Filipino, the bookstore owner’s Filipino, and it’s Asian Heritage Month 🇵🇭♥️

(Annoyed at myself for getting my thumb in the way though, ugh.)

Say hello to Twist the Branch, the novel formerly known as Seeker of the Lost Song!

It’s been a while since this book first went out on submission. I’ve recently worked with @karenaparker.com on developing it further, and I’ve refined it this year. So allow me to reacquaint you with it:

Quote with a movie poster from the year you turned eighteen.

This transcription of a Chinese voicemail really went places, oh my god.

*This colour combo is horrible for accessibility and I didn't recreate this design for Patreon (or the one entirely contained in a dropdown menu). I did recreate some old easier-on-the eyes entries, like the one in this image. I miss the '90s/early '00s ethos of fucking around with HTML in Notepad.

It's been 2 weeks since my winter Patreon project, and I'm still really proud of it. One of the pieces of writing was a poem based on a 2001 online journal entry. And honestly I love the ostentatious design of that old entry too*.

I'm starting on my spring project!

They talk of healing yr inner child, but what about honouring yr inner goth teenager?

Hi I’m 44 I hurt my back doing a stupid little dance while spring cleaning & I did some little photoshoots with dying flowers. This is pretty much the life I imagined when I was 18. 🖤

Thrifting is an underrated form of peoplewatching. I want to write flash fiction about every person who owned these items of clothing.

(Which may have been easy since I considered buying the first and last ones. The last one is a dress. I have no business wearing a mithril dress but I WOULD.)

So begins my chaotic neutral arc - my books are still unorganized after 5 months in this apartment. And I actually kind of like it! It keeps me on my toes. It feels weirdly comforting to know that if I want to read something I have to intentionally seek it out. Is that a cope? Who can say? 😈

Preordering books = lovely surprises in the mail! Looking forward to digging into the fantasy novel world of @elizachanwrites.bsky.social’s Fathomfolk and the Chinese poetry selected and translated by @yilinwriter.bsky.social in The Lantern and the Night Moths.

When I say using the library is an easy way to support authors, this is one reason. The Public Lending Right program sends me yearly payments for having copies of The Quiet is Loud in Canadian libraries. If you’re a published Canadian author who hasn’t yet registered, you can do so until May 1!

Do you notice recurring themes with your favourite writers and other creatives? In my latest Substack, I’m revisiting some of my old writing and the things I seem to revisit over and over (and over and over).
