"You haven't really been anywhere until you've got back home." – Terry Pratchett.
Does Brisbane count? Because I did between 4 and 8km each way for work year round for a few years.

Exactly. Many people tend to focus on the Dutch having either physically separated paths or protected lanes but that's really only on the larger roads to get between neighbourhoods. Within a neighbourhood you have a traffic circulation plan that keeps out through traffic and allows contraflow biking

I'm confident that the UK will make a mess of it though given how difficult things were when I lived there and had to deal with HMRC, NHS, banks, etc.

Is the ACLU against compulsory balloting?
December 13, 2025 at 4:19 AM
Someone should inform the California ACLU that despite the country completely rebuilding its cities for cars, driving is not a human right. Not driving while under the influence is a condition of keeping your licence and both drinking alcohol and driving are choices.

That layout is so cluttered but could be fixed by grouping the common links together with a bus lane and using a few well placed modal filters.

Meanwhile, London's Sadiq Khan will tell anyone who listens that the Hopper Fare means you get unlimited bus transfers within an hour of the first journey leg's start.

To add more info, the trip home was with a five year old who'd had a play date at a friend's place in Slotervaart and we needed to get back to De Pijp. It was inconvenient but possible to get home via a mix of trams and bike (we'd left it at Surinameplein).

Walked the bike through Vondelpark to a stop on an unaffected tram line, locked the bike up and got home alright. Came back the next day, and walked the bike to the nearest bike shop (Zwarte Fietsplan Oud-West) where they replaced the crank on the spot for a total of €18. Deadset legends.

Because the infrastructure in Utrecht and Amsterdam is so good you'll see the elderly, people with disabilities and young children riding to get around. Is it all of them? No. Does flat topography play a part? Sure. But let's not pretend that there's no reasonable alternative to cars for them.

Bell bollards on the A24 are the apex predator of that environment
November 29, 2025 at 8:17 PM
Kieran you are in a very small niche here.

I don't watch DRUK but I see it.

Someone should provide them a copy of Inclusive Mobility as a Christmas gift.
November 26, 2025 at 12:13 PM
This would get you sectioned in the UK.

Someone has a grumble in the pub/social media, it makes it to the local news site as a "controversial scheme", councils get skittish and before you know it the plan to replace wands that keep getting run over with metal bollards is sunk as the driver knocking them down has has called them ableist.
November 21, 2025 at 3:31 PM
Between elections locals should get involved in the local plan but councils seem reluctant to say "this is happening and we are seeking feedback, not consent". You cannot operate a council where an organised group of residents can veto every planning application – at least not without being elected.
