Wholeheartedly agree. I still play so many #ZXSpectrum and #SAMCoupe games where originality shines through.

Just about all modern games (especially the franchises that repeat the same guff every 1-2 years) are of no interest to me.

the graphics. The TEA2000 isn't even part of SAM's design! (it's a composite video encoder chip, the SAM uses the MC1377 for that purpose). The graphics are all generated by the SAM's ASIC.

For the November 1989 issue (one month before the SAM Coupe launched) YS got a few bits wrong. The SAM's ASIC wasn't made by Fujitsu, MGT changed manufacturer to VLSI, which also allowed more gates/features. The palette had increased to 128 colours, not 64. And the TEA2000 chip didn't generate...

I never got too far in the game back in the 80s. But 'The Vat' was always my favourite level - jumping around in the disintegrating blocks was fun!

Manic Miner is a true #retrogaming classic, I enjoyed it on the #ZXSpectrum, then in the 1990s on the #SAMCoupe which has to be the definitive #8bit version, with 60 caverns! I recently revamped the back issue of SAM Revival magazine (#9) which features the game on the coverdisk. www.samcoupe.com

But nothings beats my 1985 birthday, running to buying Jetset Willy II and the latest Your Spectrum with the full map and pages of POKEs! Good times indeed!

In terms of the other mags I rarely went near Sinclair User. Picked up the very occasional Crash if something on the covertape caught my eye.

I remember the transition and still have the Rasputin demo covertape from YS1. The quality did diminish, but for me it was still an essential purchase over the years. It did decay so badly at the end, but the covertapes and one or two sections (mainly SAM+SpecTec) were what it was only bought for.

The reducing page count of Your Sinclair was noticeable, but still a lot of interesting stuff. 2 page SAM Centre (although I didn't have a SAM yet!) and Spec Tec Jr pages were great for techy/coding (I didn't know Z80 asm, or Simon, yet!) All that changed in 93 after getting my first #SAMCoupe! 😀

And always refer to the disks as 780K. The standard SAM format is 800K (20K for the directory, 780K for files) but you can technically use all the space and format extra tracks, as long as you have a sector of code (Track 4, Sector 1) with a routine for BOOT to load in to then do what you want.

Odd that SAMCo don't mention the (MGT) ZX Spectrum emulator that's still included on the introductory disk, instead they mention using The Messenger interface (hardware to link a Speccy to the SAM) or SAM Tape 4 (a commercial speccy emulator) for running ZX Spectrum software on SAM.

This was a good move by SAMCo. At launch, a 512K SAM Coupe with one drive would have worked out to be about £290. So, nearly a third off with a drive, full internal memory and the latest ROM was a good deal. This price held for quite a few years - that's what I paid in early 1993 for my first SAM.
