In 21st century US politics, the two most important ongoing stories are:
1) The radicalization of the GOP, &
2) the degradation of the information environment, ie, the death of accountability journalism.

Neither gets a fraction of the attention devoted to, say, annoying woke undergrads.

European countries’ spending on their universal health care ranges from 7-12% of GDP if memory serves. And we do pay just over 20% of our (much larger) gdp

Unrelated to this topic, but there is new research on adolescent brain development. It’s a bit more complex than “not fully developed”. Adriana Galván and David Yeager are good sources for learning more if you are interested

The funny thing is that learning to guess (really well) based on context is a pretty good description of the failed instructional strategy described in Sold a Story. We are doing to algorithms the precise thing that prevents children from understanding what they read.

Get a grip. He’s not talking about shipping people to El Salvador, he’s talking about how other democracies can build trains and housing but the U.S. repeatedly tried and fails to do the same. These are democracies with greater protections for the public and better human rights

Again, you don’t know LA. It’s physically impossible to assemble 1.5 million people in one place here. There is no equivalent to London in the US. Not even NYC has the train capacity. We have to do politics differently

In transit challenged LA, 36k is impressive. You are comparing a sport with billions of pounds of infrastructure enabling attendance to a one-off event in a park. It was 82 degrees in direct sunlight, with no seating. Thousands couldn’t even see the stage but stayed. Save your pessimism

I agree wholeheartedly. Still, I grapple with the fact that voters in California where I live have REPEATEDLY voted down rent control propositions over those same four years. I had expected some manifestation of that anger to show up there, but there was nothing.

Lots of focus on churches here, and very little on schools. The most dangerous consequence will be students who stop coming to school because they or their family members are undocumented.

A few viral cases of ICE officers following kids home could disrupt the education of thousands.
