The subsidies paid to european farmers is in the end a subsidie to the consumer. Because it makes it possible for the farmers to keep selling their products at a price that would bankrupt them had it not been for the subsidies.

Because they are a lot more expensive. The have cheaper land, much larger farms, (andvantage of scale) much cheaper labor and less bureaucracy. I am a swedish farmer myself.
