What if rocks could make oxygen? This sci-fi sounding “what if” may be true! Researchers at @samsocean.bsky.social were shocked to find oxygen production in the deep sea and traced its most probable source to metallic rocks on the sea floor. Read more: www.sciencejournalforkids.org/articles/how...

#Ocean science outreach activities in Scotland have received a boost following a charitable donation worth £10,000 to SAMS.🌊

The donation of £8,000, plus Gift Aid, from Oban resident Robert Kincaid will buy kit including an ROV, a hydrophone, & a field microscope.

Tom Wilding from @samsocean.bsky.social talking on estimating the Infaunal Quality Index (IQI) inside aquaculture areas using traditional methods (costly) and novel #eDNA metabarcoding. Developed the eDNA2IQI r-package to do this by using sequence data generated from 16S to predict IQI. #UKDNAWG25

Our marine robotics team have been out beyond the #Hebridean islands to deploy a glider in the north-east Atlantic over the coming months.

Gliders are able to gather data in hard-to-reach parts of the ocean, filling gaps in our understanding of large-scale currents.🌊
