It's a really slow-paced game, but speed-up buttons on emulators work wonders. The biggest problem with it is that the first few chapters of Book 2 are not well-designed and are a real slog. And it's a game where you will want a guide.

Yeah...it was odd and didn't feel respectful to her character. They could have done a Kes return so much better than that.

That's honestly fair. The devs made it so the game is playable even if you're not good at parrying/dodging, but honestly, if you don't enjoy those mechanics, the biggest appeal of the game isn't gonna do it for you.
