The southern point of Tenerife, near El Medano, is characterized by an undersea volcanic eruption just off the coast. At the end of the 19th century, sand mining in this area caused damage and erosion. In 1996 the area was declared a nature preserve and now is recovering.

This sand is from the Kem Kem Beds in Morocco. The Kem Kem Beds, also known as the Continental Intercalaire, span the border between Morocco and Algeria.

They date back to the start of the late Cretaceous period.
