I agree with you. The problem is the original ancient texts were dogma, especially against a woman becoming Buddha. All sorts of ridiculous and patriarchal rules - that’s why Zen Buddhism was an important addition to the options for people.

I mean there is some gray area but I think we can probably agree that drinking to get drunk is not a Buddhist practice lol—throughout the entire book he equates being drunk and high with being Buddha. To me, personally, that is a pretty clear mix up.
