Tbf I don't think character continuity was really much of a concern for these comics. They were basically written to quickly mouthpiece about various social issues the author saw as bullshit. I assume messages fit for his wife still had to technically star Everett since he was the title character.

He was basically telling Everett that his hat was about 40 years out of date
