Clouds over the heads of Ayr just now when we popped out for a walk. Mum is coming close to the end of her life now- but she is comfortable and holding court from her bed which is lovely.

Why does the NHS keep costing more?
1950 life expectancy was 69yrs it’s now 83yrs

14 more years of experience, living, grandchildren
14yrs of more costs £3600/person/year

5.6million people over 70yrs £20bn/pa

It costs to keep people alive with prevention, treatments, medicine

🌍💚 Today is World Mental Health Day 2025 💚
At Girlguiding Cymru, we know that looking after our mental health is just as important as looking after our physical health.

✨ For our girls, guiding is a safe space to make friends, grow in confidence, and try new adventures.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

That’s really not on. I suspect without family to consent it wouldn’t be done here, although I don’t know for sure.
We changed a few years ago to an opt out system, which has made some difference to transplant rates I believe- now unless opted out the family are always asked if appropriate

🌟 We're always grateful to receive feedback like this. We're proud to support people rebuilding their lives in Scotland - providing information, guidance and a sense of hope along the way. 🧡

Do you have presumed consent where you have to opt out if you don’t want to donate? We do, but the family are still asked and their wishes respected. I have no idea what would happen if someone hadn’t opted out but had no family.

The stones of Calanais... brooding, magical, other-worldly... a remarkable place especially on a wild Hebridean day.

Don’t get me started on “brave” people who “fight” cancer or “lose their battle with” a disease 😡

I wonder how many of them are spending almost all their time there, who may discover that if they come back to the UK they are not thought to have been living here and therefore aren’t entitled to NHS care at first?

Some of my oldest friends are ones I met through Girlguiding

Volunteering with Girlguiding isn’t just rewarding - it’s where friendships for life are made. Shared challenges, laughter, & purpose bring people together in a way that lasts far beyond guiding.

Sounds like the Barnardos strap line “believe in children”. Yep, I’ve seen them, I’m sure they exist

I think there is space for both. If I have an exacerbation of bronchiectasis I would like to be able to speak to someone on the phone and arrange to put a sputum sample in. If I’m worried it’s more serious I’d like to see a GP face to face- the ANP I get has no nuance to her decision making

Getting a life-limiting diagnosis is such a personal thing, & if we want to be supportive it's important to hear where someone's at- to be there, & be open to going with the flow. There's no right way. Sometimes it's about information, sometimes it's about feelings, sometimes it's just normal chat.

Sorry to hear that Shaun, it’s a tough one.

MNDA seem to be one of the most supportive disease specific charities

Bets on my mum recognising she will need a hospital bed more than the 10day turnaround time they have for them just now 😳
I thought we were slow but really…

Oh, for context, she is a retired nurse😬

Happy #SASweek25 to all who celebrate.

Remember, a SAS doctor is for life, not just SAS week.

#SASsix
SAS six infographic, featuring the six asks to make a SAS career a viable alternative.

Every early career SAS doctor should have access to an educational supervisor.

All SAS doctors should have equity of access to professional development opportunities relevant to their stage of career.

All specialty doctors who meet the required capabilities should have the opportunity to become specialists.

Senior SAS doctors should be offered the opportunity to be educators at every level on a par with consultants e.g. educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, directors of medical education.

All extended roles in leadership and management should be open to all substantive medical staff that is, consultants and appropriately experienced SAS doctors.

All LEDs employed for more than two years within one NHS employer should be offered the opportunity to transfer to the appropriate SAS contract.
