There might be a transition period where everyone adjusts - but if you actually persecute the illegal trade then things change pretty quickly.
I know some counties in Germany have started the "Schatzregal" quite recently (last decade or so) and there weren't any major problems...

I am so heartbroken and stunned by this!
In Germany, many counties have something we call "Schatzregal" - any historical or archaeological treasure (Schatz) automatically belongs to the state/county by law!
Some things still get stolen and sold but we can and do prosecute those we catch doing it.

At the moment (hope to live longer than 39) it would be my PhD 😅

Sorry for the long post but I just needed to get it off my chest to be able to focus on working on my paper again as even though I am unemployed, publish or perish still applies to academics 😂🥲

I am an early career academic. In Germany. We get loads of short term contracts and there will potentially be many more of these ahead. I am a single mother. I do ALL of the care work on top of my job. I don't have weekends to myself. AND on top of that I have to fight for these basic things. 5/
