So here's that story about sneaking the black nanny into a Vegas show, in Esther's own words:
The children came right along with us to Las vegas. In the daytime, I could be there for their meals and take them swimming in those beautiful pools. There was no reason that they shouldn't be with us all the time now that we were staying at the Sahara Hotel. Or so I thought. The Sahara thought otherwise. My nanny, Jane boyd, was black. Actually, she was sort of café au lait but that distinction was lost on the management of the sahara, who declared that no blacks could set foot on the premises. I had heard all these stories about Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and other entertainers who were not allowed to stay at the hotels where they were headlining. I was amazed to find out that Vegas casinos never let black people even gamble. I have thought they would take anybody's money. The police in Las Vegas would step in and ask those who were black to leave the casinos. It was an ugly policy that was rigidly enforced, and Sahara was not making any exceptions for me or my children. If Gene were to take care of my three children, they would all have to stay across the tracks from the Sahara Hotel in an apartment complex that was clearly designated for the "help". Jane was not at all happy to be treated as "help". In my home, she was family. I had told her, "When I had my children over to you, I don't want them to feel any difference in the warmth of our arms. I want you to love them and care for them in the same way I do." And she did. We became good friends, and when I went through some tough [cont'd next photo] times, she was there for me. We shared holidays and vacations together, and because we wore the same size, we even shared clothes. She was a strong, assertive woman, and I liked that in her because it was good for the children. It almost broke my heart to send the children to a building away from me. There was no way I could explain. It was either that or back to Los angeles, where I wouldn't see them. I explained that "across the way" meant sleeping rooms because mommy and daddy came home so late at night. I was furious at the Sahara. Jane agreed to tolerate the "other side of the tracks" treatment because she knew how much I missed the children. One day, near the end of the engagement, I came to her and said, "Jane, I know you've been treated rotten and I appreciate that you've endured it for me. I've got an idea about how we can get back at the Sahara in a small way and have some fun." Her face brightened into a big smile for the first time in weeks. "I want you to try on this Indian sari that I brought along and see if you like it." The sari was a beautiful shade of turquoise with gold accents. Jane looked gorgeous in it. I asked her to invite her boyfriend, George, to come to Las Vegas for the last weekend of our show at the Sahara. We called a tuxedo shop to order his outfit and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to find some place that would make a glamorous looking turban. Jane and I researched the proper attire, jewelry, and makeup for Indian royalty. [cont'd] Next, I called Steve Parker, the manager of the Sahara showroom. "I've just had some exciting news," I gushed. "My friends the maharajah and the maharani of Jodhpur are in Los Angeles, and they are coming to Las Vegas for the last performance of our show!" The name was ridiculous, but I was improvising. "They're Indian royalty and I want them seated at a ringside table and given every courtesy of the Sahara." Parker was so enthusiastic about his showroom being graced by royalty and the possibility of their losing a small fortune at the tables, I considered putting a little heavy tan makeup on the kids and having the maharajah bring his whole family. But I realized the kids would start yelling "Mommy" and "Daddy" when we came on stage and blow the whole thing. [cont'd and yes I know this bit is problematic] "Oh, by the way," Parker asked, "are the Jodhpurs going to be *your* guests?" This was Las Vegas code for "Are you picking up the tab?" "These people are royalty," I said indignantly. "Any hotel on the strip would be honored to have them. If you prefer, I'll entertain them somewhere else." He was still apologizing when we hung up. When Jane in her sari and George in his turban arrived at the showroom that night, Steve Parker was there to greet them personally. Jane looked radiantly beautiful. The orchestra played a fanfare when they entered and the audience applauded as Steve escorted "the royal couple" to a ringside table. As he promised, they got the A treatment, from flowers to Dom Perignon. When I came on stage, I introduced them as dear friends who had entertained me so lavishly in India and I dedicated the show to them. When the show was over, Ben and I went down and sat ringside with them. The tourists couldn't take enough snapshots of us, and Jane and I were kept busy autographing programs. At the end of the evening, Jane and George went back to the little apartment across the tracks where my children were waiting up for them with a sitter. The next morning, Steve thanked me very warmly for bringing them and assured me that the Sahara was honored to have had them as the hotel's guests. He even complimented me on what a special night I had arranged for them. I said, "Yes, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could do this for all of our friends." He missed my double meaning. The Sahara Hotel never knew that they were the first establishment in Las Vegas to break the color barrier.

Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

THE SELFISH SIN OF SHYNESS Let me give you an example, a prime example. The so-called shy kid, who doesn’t shake hands at church, okay? Usually what happens is you come up, ya’ know and here I am, I’m the guest and I walk up and I’m saying hi to somebody and they say to their kid “Hey, ya’ know, say Good-morning to Dr. Baucham,” and the kid hides and runs behind the leg and here’s what’s supposed to happen. This is what we have agreed upon, silently in our culture. What’s supposed to happen is that, I’m supposed to look at their child and say, “Hey, that’s okay.” But I can’t do that. Because if I do that, then what has happened is that number one, the child has sinned by not doing what they were told to do, it’s in direct disobedience. Secondly, the parent is in sin for not correcting it, and thirdly, I am in sin because I have just told a child it’s okay to disobey and dishonor their parent in direct violation of scripture. I can’t do that, I won’t do that. I’m gonna stand there until you make ‘em do what you said.

Assistant Chief Constable Jim Pearce said after the case that Devon and Cornwall Police had "worked closely" with the trust and "none of the criminal charges related to Hopper's professional conduct with no risk to patients he treated in his work at the hospital identified during the current police investigation". However, former patients of Hopper, including some who underwent amputations, have contacted a South West-based medical negligence firm. They said they were concerned about the treatment they received from Hopper, in light of the criminal charges brought against him. Mike Bird, partner at Enable Law, said the case had caused "shock and grave concern" among his former patients. "Some have had life-changing surgery and are now worried it was not really needed," Mr Bird said. "While we understand that RCHT have said that the charges do not relate to his professional conduct and there is apparently no evidence suggesting any risk to patients, this is such a serious situation that there must be a rigorous public investigation."
