Michigan is blue-ish. It's a swing state with lots of regional and rural/urban red/blue divides.

The police action here has nothing to do with the political preferences of the city as a whole, which is definitely not red to begin with, as others have pointed out.

There are hundreds of shipwrecks in the Great lakes! It was a pretty brutal environment for shipping before NOAA existed.

I've lived close to Lake Michigan (on the Michigan side) my entire life. The maritime history and culture here in the Great Lakes runs deep.
