History isn’t just dates and old buildings—it’s our shared story. As a heritage illustrator & designer, I strive to make the past accessible, relatable, and engaging for everyone.

What’s one historical story or place that has stuck with you? Let’s chat!

I'm heading to NY in May to launch my LSU Book "Green and Blue" and am exploring the potential of staying on for a few days if any U.S. institutions are interested in a seminar on the research. If you know of someone please feel free to pass on my details! My email is shielsheritage[at]gmail.com

Scottish-themed Cert for Alexander Taylor of Linlithgow, West Lothian of the 79th New York "Highland Guard." He was KIA at the Battle of Secessionville, South Carolina in 1862, leaving behind a 7-year-old daughter in Scotland, and a widow and two step-children in New Jersey. #ScottishDiaspora.

I like drawing individuals and scenes with a story. It challenges me, illustrating how a location or event might have looked. I will often add a dash of humour and wherever I can, I will abuse my powers and add a dog 😊

One of my first reconstructions was published in the publication ”Places for the living, Places for the Dead: Archaeological Discoveries on the N25 New Ross Bypass.”
I am still happy with the image but it is also nice to see my style has evolved #archaeologicalillustration

An interesting project to illustrate. I recommend the article ”A unique example of medieval bound burials in the context of Irish Archaeology”, published in 2024 Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland Journal of Irish Archaeology.

For #NationalIllustrationDay, let me introduce my latest Figurine illustration - the Thor figurine, the Eyrarland Statue. Found in Iceland from around AD 1000, it's interpreted as a Thor figurine, possibly also the centrepiece for a game of hnefatafl.

Making a Bronze Age axe…

A few years ago @emlouwynjones.bsky.social and I made a film for Kings Lynn museum showing the heating, casting and finishing involved in making the kind of axes used to make Seahenge.

It's that time of the year again when my Gnomes reappear. This year, in addition to actually having the base cards for sale, I have gotten a couple of requests for customisation. So much fun!
